How it works

From your first move to your next game

1Pick your opening

Choose what you want to play as White or as Black, from the London System to the Sicilian.

2Learn it move by move

Each lesson shows a few moves on a real board, and the idea behind every one of them.

3Test yourself

Then it is your turn: find the moves yourself. A hint is there when you are stuck.

4Follow the path

Lessons open one after another, unit by unit, until you know the whole opening.

5Earn your stars

Stars for every lesson, a trophy for every unit, and a certificate when you finish the course.

Your first course

A knight on your home screen

Five minutes a day is how an opening sticks. Fianko's knight keeps count, and lets you know how your day is going.

Your streak

One lesson a day keeps it alive. Pick the goal you aim for.

A daily reminder

At the time you choose, and never more than you asked for.

A home screen widget

The knight shows your streak at a glance, and gets more nervous as the evening comes.

The daily review in Fianko: six moves are due today.
Daily review

The moves you are about to forget come back

Fianko keeps track of every move you learned. Each day it brings back the ones you are about to forget, so your openings are still there when you sit down to play. It takes a minute.

Questions

Good to know

Is Fianko free?
Yes, with no ads and no account. Your own opening stays free for good, with the first unit of every other opening, the first 7 endgame chapters and 10 puzzles a day. Fianko Plus, sold through Google Play, opens everything else.
Is the London System good for beginners?
Yes. White plays the same setup against almost anything Black does: 1.d4, 2.Bf4, then e3, Nf3 and c3. You learn one plan instead of a hundred lines, and it gives you a solid game every time.
How long does it take to learn an opening?
A lesson takes about five minutes. At one lesson a day, you know the main ideas of an opening within a few weeks, and the daily review keeps them fresh.
Do I need to know how to play chess?
You need to know how the pieces move. Fianko does the rest: it explains every move of the opening and why it is played.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Every course is inside the app, so you can learn on a plane or on the bus.
Which opening should I learn next?
One for each colour. As White, start with the London System. As Black, a solid answer to 1.e4 like the Caro-Kann, and one to 1.d4 like the Slav. When you finish a course, Fianko suggests what comes next.
Which languages does Fianko speak?
English, Chinese, Hindi, Spanish, Arabic, French, Bengali and Portuguese, lessons included.
Is it on iPhone?
Fianko comes to Android first.
